RICHARD ABIDIN BREEN (Abs)
born: 29 June 1979, Enfield/London, England

Richard Abidin Breen was born to a Turkish father and Irish mother in the tough, working-class Hackney section of London. His dad, a musician & mechanic, left when he was young and mom Kay raised the boy herself, sending him to a Catholic school since it was the best in the area where they lived. At an early age, he was singing, imitating and playing pretend ....Kay would make Abs fancy costumes. He especially loved being Michael Jackson and even wrote him a 10 page letter once. At 8, he had a little band with a cousin. Recognizing his talent, he was accepted into the Italia Conti stage school and started auditioning around London. At this time, Abs became closer to his father, who lived nearby, and began helping out in the automotive garage his dad owned and learning to speak Turkish from his many cousins. He spent his spare time listening to the underground sounds of London, practicing rapping and learning to DJ by age 13.  Abs had taken dance lessons for years (he loved the girls) and was naturally graceful. He was an average student but started hanging with a tough crowd in his teens and his grades and attitude went downhill. He took a chance in early 1997 to audition & win a place in a new boy band with 'edge' which would soon be called FIVE.  Since Richard Neville, also in the group, had no catchy nickname, it was decided that Richard Breen would use his own... "Abs", a short form of his middle name, to distinguish the two apart. Abs was 17. When Five finally called it a day in September of 2001 after an incredibly successful 4 1/2 years, Abs decided that he still wanted more and embarked on a solo recording career with the encouragement of his record label, BMG/RCA. That's where he is today...

his idea of a perfect dinner: shepherd's pie & beans, apple crumble OR Turkish salad, mixed kebabs with lots of different kinds of meat, rice pilaf
disadvantages of being famous: none. It's amazing... how can you complain?
advantages of being famous: everything! 


Bits and Bobs: 

...pierced his ear when he was about 15 (he can't remember exactly!)
...can speak Turkish fairly well
...the first DJ name he picked for himself was "THE GENIE"
...sleeps in boxers or with nothing, depends on how he feels right then
...has had the silver dog chain that he wears around his neck 'forever'. Takes it off for bed
...is not a bad little artist. Art was his fav subject in school
...usually shaves a little slash into his left eyebrow and he also waxes his chest
...has 5 tattoos (as of Feb 2002): a little Turkish flag (star and moon) on his back, a paw print on his right leg, a Chinese dragon on his back left shoulder, gothic letters that spell DREAMER on his right forearm and a pair of wings on his left arm.
...every day is a bad hair day to Abs. That's why he cut it off.
...plays with everything that he can get his hands on.
...total computer freak and video game addict
